Is the Sand and Water Table NOT FUN for You?


  Do your parents and administrators think your students are just PLAYING when they are at the Sand and Water table? Can you name the objectives they are learning to justify the time at the center? Do you know what research says about the benefits of using the Sand and Water center?

Research shows that multisensory exploration-based activities are best for brain development. Using a sand/water or “sensory” table encourages higher-level thinking and problem-solving skills, naturally scaffolds learning, builds vocabulary, improves strength in small motor muscles, and allows for exploration, observation and discovery. These are just a few of the many reasons to use a sand/water table!!
Here are some ways we use a Sand and Water table in our room with connections to core objectives.
Letter Identification
Students go "fishing" for letters.

Science Thematic Vocabulary
Students match "hidden" letters with printed vocabulary words.

Science Life Cycles
Students reenact the life cycle of pumpkins.

Sound-Symbol Correspondence
Students match letters they have "fished" for to an alphabet chart.

    1. It really isn't as hard as you think. A large plastic storage container can be used if you don't have a sand and water table.
